Service Area

Serving All 14 NJ Counties

Companion headstones from Companion Memorials are placed in cemeteries throughout all 14 New Jersey counties, from our Morris County workshop in Madison. Our installation crews travel to Bergen, Essex, Passaic, Hudson, Union, Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, Somerset, Middlesex, Mercer, Monmouth, and Ocean counties on a regular basis, coordinating with each cemetery's monument office before every installation. Families who have lost one spouse and wish to prepare a companion stone in advance are common clients; so are families who have lost both and need a single monument for a shared grave. We serve both situations with the same attentiveness and without rushing any decision.

Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

Companion headstones are subject to the same monument regulations as single headstones in New Jersey, but with additional considerations related to their width. A companion monument is typically significantly wider than a single stone, and some cemeteries limit the total footprint a monument may occupy on a grave plot. Before designing your companion headstone, Companion Memorials contacts your cemetery to confirm the maximum permitted width, the required base dimensions, and any restrictions on the monument's height relative to its width. These specifications are built into your monument's design before production begins.

Foundation Requirements

Wider companion headstones require foundations proportional to their width — a longer concrete footing that supports the full base uniformly. Our installation crew pours companion monument foundations to the cemetery's specified dimensions, allowing adequate cure time before the finished stone is set. Leveling a wide companion monument requires particular care: any twist in the base will be visible along the top surface of the stone, and our crew uses mechanical leveling equipment to ensure the finished monument is perfectly flat across its full width.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Faith-based cemeteries in New Jersey often accommodate companion monuments with specific rules about how pre-planned panels — those prepared while one spouse is still living — should be handled. Some institutions require that the living person's panel be left unfinished until the time of death; others permit a pre-finished panel with the final date left open. Companion Memorials is familiar with these conventions and can advise on the appropriate approach for your cemetery. Religious symbols and imagery appropriate to the family's tradition are incorporated with care and, where required, with prior cemetery approval.

Companion / Double Headstone

A companion headstone — also called a double headstone — is a granite monument designed to hold the names, dates, and memorial information for two individuals, typically a married couple, on a shared base. At Companion Memorials, we produce companion headstones in several configurations, each suited to different cemetery settings and family preferences. The most common form is a single wide die with two name panels separated by a central design element — a heart, a cross, a floral motif, or simply a clean vertical division. This configuration reads as a unified composition, the two panels in quiet conversation with each other. An alternative configuration uses two matching upright stones set on a continuous shared base — each stone carrying one person's information, the bases touching or separated by a small gap depending on plot dimensions. For lawn-section cemeteries that require flat markers, we produce companion flat markers wide enough to carry both inscriptions, either as a single panel or as two coordinated flat stones set side by side. All companion headstones are available in upright, slant, and flat formats and are produced from American-made granite to cemetery-compliant specifications.

Granite Options

Granite selection for a companion headstone follows the same principles as for a single monument, with the additional consideration that a wider stone shows more of the granite's natural variation. India Black granite, with its very consistent coloring, produces a companion monument whose two panels read as a single surface — particularly appropriate for the unified composition of a marriage memorial. Mountain Gray granite shows more crystalline variation across a wide surface, creating a subtle texture that some families find more organic and personal. Dakota Mahogany granite carries a warm, reddish-brown tone that reads as inviting rather than formal — appropriate for families who want their companion monument to feel as welcoming as the couple themselves. All American-made granite options are available at our Morris County showroom for comparison.

Custom Design Process

Designing a companion headstone at Companion Memorials begins with understanding the relationship the monument will represent. During your consultation — in English, Russian, or Polish, at our Morris County showroom or by phone — we discuss the couple's life, their shared symbols and traditions, the cemetery's dimensional requirements, and how to balance two people's identities within a unified design. When one spouse has already passed, we also discuss how to handle the living spouse's information — whether to engrave all data now, leave a panel open, or prepare a design that can be completed in a future addition. Our design team produces a scaled drawing showing both panels, the central design element, and all carved elements for your approval before production begins.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Producing a companion headstone at Companion Memorials follows the same six-step process as every monument we make, with particular attention to the design-approval stage given the monument's dual purpose. Step one: we consult with your family, documenting both individuals' names and dates, the cemetery's location and regulations, your preferences for stone width, style, color, and finish, and any central design element to be incorporated. Step two: our design team produces a scaled drawing showing both panels in their final configuration, which you review and approve. Step three: the selected American-made granite slab is pulled and inspected; wider companion slabs require additional quality checks for surface uniformity across the full width. Step four: hand-carving — each panel's lettering, the central design element, and any borders or symbols are executed by our artisans in sequence. Step five: finishing and inspection — letter fills, polish, and edge treatments are applied; the finished stone is compared against the approved drawing. Step six: the monument is delivered to the cemetery, a wide concrete foundation is prepared and cured, the stone is set and leveled, and the installation is photographed for your family's records.

What Families Say

New Jersey families have entrusted us with their memorials for three generations.

“My parents were married for 61 years and we wanted a stone that showed their togetherness. Companion Memorials listened to their story, suggested a design we would never have thought of ourselves, and made a companion headstone that captures who they were as a couple perfectly. Visiting the cemetery now feels like visiting them.” — Susan, Morris County NJ

If you do not see your question here, call us.

How long does it take to design and install a headstones?

Companion headstones follow the same general timeline as single headstones — eight to twelve weeks from initial consultation to installation. The design phase may take slightly longer for companion monuments as there are more elements to review and approve. We communicate a schedule at the start of every order.

Are your memorials cemetery-compliant?

Yes. Every companion headstone is designed to the specific current regulations of the receiving cemetery, including maximum width and base requirements. We confirm these details before production begins.

Can I bring my own design or photo?

Yes. Families bring photographs, shared symbols, religious imagery, and personal details about the couple. Our design team translates those into a unified companion monument design for your approval.

Do you offer veteran companion markers?

Yes. Companion veteran headstones — designed for a veteran and spouse — are among our most meaningful commissions. We incorporate military branch emblems and service information for the veteran alongside the shared memorial design.
